Rebecca Minkoff S/S ’15: Fringe Benefits

While the fact that she had a killer live performance from Brooklyn-based band, Little Daylight, a star-studded front row, and even a 3D element tied into the end of the show, it was the clothes on the runway that left a lasting impact when she debuted her collection during New York Fashion Week. Covetable fringe bags, fringe tassels and a pastel palette defined the collection, which was inspired by iconic photographer Deborah Turbeville.

Jason Wu: S/S ’15 bag collaboration with Diane Kruger

Jason Wu’s place in history has already been assured by Michelle Obama’s patronage, but the announcement that morning that InterLuxe was buying a majority stake in his company suggested that he is headed for a berth in the commercial firmament as well.

Effortless minimalis, working with a neutral palette, Mr. Wu sent out shirtdresses, some slouchy, some crisply belted, deeply side-slit skirts and a plunging navy gown that seemed to float by itself down the runway (creature of the wind, indeed).

It was sexy, but never trashy — and though you probably won’t be able to squash a banana into the bag he has created with Diane Kruger, the Charlotte tote (after Rampling) should be able to accommodate it. -Alexandra Jacobs NYTimes

Parisienne Chic for Uniqlo

Part of the allure of Ines De La Fressange, her sense of humour and flair for fun aside, is her incredible fashion history. Far from being reverential about the time that she spent as a model and muse for Yves Saint Laurent and Karl Lagerfeld, De La Fressange speaks with a candidness bordering on sacrilege. Drawing on an electronic cigarette, De La Fressange herself is a collection of cliché contradictions that are nevertheless true. Unbelievably youthful, her beauty at 57 derives at least in part from the fact that her mannerisms and spirit of fun have more in common with a boy of 10 than a woman of almost 60. She is elegant, but very low-maintenance; chic but not stuffy; thoughtful but in no way introverted. Every second comment is self-deprecating and dismissive of her incredible fashion history - and yet she has complete confidence in herself. “We just imagined everything is possible. The fabrics, the details - we managed to keep the prices down without compromising. It’s not that different from Rue Cambon you know! It’s even better than Phoebe Philo, since I don’t have to move from my home.” Coco Chanel said: “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman,” and De La Fressange’s approach for Uniqlo perfectly encapsulates this mantra by that other stylish, masculine-inspired, French woman. Perfectly cut shirts, artfully rumpled jackets, simple chic trousers, a tightly edited palette; each piece is just what your wardrobe needs, without pulling any focus whatsoever. Arriving in stores tomorrow, September 4th.

Birkin on Birkin

In 1981, Hermès chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas was seated next to Jane Birkin on a flight from Paris to London. She had just placed her straw bag in the overhead compartment of her seat, but the contents fell to the deck, leaving her to scramble to replace them. Birkin explained to Dumas that it had
